Meryl Streep plays Kay in Hope Springs, a woman married for thirty-one years who finally drags her reluctant husband to intensive couples counseling because they have basically become roommates. David Frankel directed this 2012 comedy-drama, putting Streep and Tommy Lee Jones through painfully awkward therapy sessions with Steve Carell as a soft-spoken counselor. Kay books the trip to Maine because she and Arnold have not been intimate in years, sleep in separate rooms, and only talk about groceries and schedules. Streep plays her as someone who spent decades going along with things and finally hit a wall. The film gets squirmy laughs from therapy exercises that force the couple to admit how far apart they have drifted. Frankel keeps the camera tight on the two leads and lets their discomfort do the work in scenes that could easily turn into sitcom bits. Streep got praised for making Kay's loneliness feel specific, not just generic sad-wife stuff. She plays a woman who still wants this to work but genuinely does not know if her husband can change. Her watch has not been identified.
