Don't Look Up is a movie about everyone shouting for attention while a comet heads for Earth. Leonardo DiCaprio's astronomer gets a makeover and a cable-news affair; Meryl Streep plays a president, Jonah Hill her idiot son, Cate Blanchett a morning-show host. Melanie Lynskey plays June Mindy, DiCaprio's wife, who watches her husband become famous and ridiculous from their kitchen in Michigan and mostly just wants him to come home.
In a quiet dinner scene she rests her cheek on her hand, and on that wrist is a round watch with a white dial, a gold-toned case, and a brown leather strap. It is a plain, pretty watch, the visual opposite of the hardware around it. The film is full of expensive watches that collectors later catalogued: DiCaprio's Cartier Tank, Streep's Piaget, the fake Richard Mille skull on Jonah Hill. Nobody bothered to identify June's.
It fits her. June is the one grounded, unglamorous person in a story about vanity, and her watch is the same: no logo to read, no statement, just a plain round face for telling the time. The brand stays unknown, which for once seems like the point rather than a gap.
