Mel Gibson wears a Rolex Submariner

Robert Towne wrote and directed Tequila Sunrise (1988), and Mel Gibson plays Dale "Mac" McKussic, a retired drug dealer in Manhattan Beach trying to go straight while his old connections and a DEA investigation refuse to let him.

On his wrist is a gold Rolex Submariner. The Submariner is Rolex's dive watch, but in full yellow gold it stops being tool gear and becomes a statement of money, the kind made in a business a man is supposed to have left. Where Nick Frescia, the detective who grew up alongside him, wears a more restrained Datejust, Mac wears the gold.
