Jack Lengyel was coaching at the College of Wooster in Ohio when Marshall University called. On November 14, 1970, Southern Airways Flight 932 had crashed on approach to Huntington, West Virginia, killing 75 people — Marshall's entire football team, its coaching staff, and a group of boosters. The school needed a new head coach. Most candidates said no. McG directed We Are Marshall (2006) with Matthew McConaughey as Lengyel, who said yes and spent his first year trying to field a team with freshmen who had never played college ball and a community that could not decide whether rebuilding the program was healing or disrespectful.
His watch is a gold-toned piece on a metal bracelet, visible in stills but not identifiable at this resolution. The sizing is right for 1970, small by today's standards, a round case that sits modestly on the wrist. For a young coach who had been working at a Division III school, nothing flashy makes sense. The green Marshall polo does more for the character than the watch does.
