On the deck of a sailboat, sunglasses on and one hand on the wheel, Tripp looks like a man with nowhere he needs to be. He is thirty-five and still lives in his childhood bedroom. In Tom Dey's 2006 romantic comedy Failure to Launch, Matthew McConaughey plays him as a charmer whose parents, Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw, are so desperate to get him out of the house that they hire Paula, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, a professional who dates grown men still living at home and nudges them toward moving out. The watch on his wrist as he sails is a steel Rolex GMT-Master, the red and blue Pepsi bezel unmistakable even in the sun.
Rolex built the GMT-Master in the mid-1950s for Pan American pilots who needed to read two time zones at once, and gave the early ones a two-color bezel, red for the daytime hours and blue for the night, so a long flight across time zones could be read at a glance. That blue and red is where the Pepsi nickname comes from. McConaughey owns a Pepsi GMT-Master in real life and has been photographed wearing it for years away from any film set.
