Addicted to Love (1997) is Griffin Dunne's sour romantic comedy in which Sam (Matthew Broderick), a gentle Midwestern astronomer, and Maggie (Meg Ryan), a vengeful photographer, build a surveillance nest to spy on the exes who left them. Staking out his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, Sam checks his watch and notes that the man is running six minutes later than he was the day before. The watch fits that obsessive bookkeeping: a black Casio Illuminator, an inexpensive resin digital with a stopwatch and a backlight, the tool of a man reducing heartbreak to a timetable.
