Matt Dillon wears a Nicolet

Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy (1989) follows Bob Hughes, the leader of a crew of addicts robbing pharmacies across 1971 Portland to feed their habit. Matt Dillon plays Hughes as smart, charming, and wholly controlled by his addiction.

The film gives the watch a close-up: a vintage steel automatic with an aged silver dial, the name Nicolet legible above the word "Automatic." Nicolet was an obscure mid-century brand, never a status name, which suits a man whose life has narrowed to the next score.
