Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo (2011) casts Matt Damon as Benjamin Mee, the widowed newspaper columnist who, in the memoir the film draws from, spent his savings on a failing animal park. The real Mee bought a run-down zoo in Devon, England; the film moves it to Southern California and keeps the shape of the story: a grieving father who decides the way back to his two children runs through a property full of tigers and bears.
The watch on Mee's wrist is a Timex Dress Expansion, reference T2N3179J: a black dial with applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, a date window at three o'clock, Timex's Indiglo backlight, and a stainless steel expansion bracelet. Set side by side, the film still and the Timex catalogue photo line up on the dial layout, the date placement and the bracelet. It is an inexpensive, unflashy quartz dress watch, the kind of piece a costume department hands a character who is not meant to be thinking about his watch, which suits a man spending the last of his money on something most people would call a mistake.
