Matt Damon wears an unidentified watch

Matt Damon plays Gardner Lodge in Suburbicon, a seemingly harmless 1950s dad whose home invasion story starts falling apart the moment anyone looks closely. George Clooney directed this 2017 dark comedy from a Coen Brothers script that had been sitting around for decades. Damon's Gardner claims to be a victim after masked intruders kill his wife and traumatize his son, but the film slowly shows his involvement in a scheme with his sister-in-law, played by Julianne Moore, who also plays the dead wife. The movie cuts between Gardner's unraveling and a subplot about the town's racist harassment of a Black family who moved in next door. The tonal shifts between these two stories never quite land. Oscar Isaac pops up as an insurance investigator asking questions Gardner cannot answer. Clooney clearly wants the film to say something about American hypocrisy, but the parts do not fit together well. Damon plays Gardner as a sweating, panicking man watching his plan fall apart, and he does that fine, but the movie got mixed reviews. His watch has not been identified.
