Mary B. McCann wears an Omega Constellation

Todd Field directed Little Children (2006) from Tom Perrotta's novel about suburban discontent, and the camera holds on one of its quieter props long enough to read it clean. Mary B. McCann plays Mary Ann, the severe playground mother who polices the other stay-at-home parents, and on her wrist is an Omega Constellation. The frame is a tight macro: a white dial, applied baton indices, the Omega logo and the word "Constellation" in script, "Swiss Made" along the bottom, and a date window at three reading 29.

This is the four-claw Constellation "Manhattan," the design Omega introduced in 1982, recognizable from the integrated griffes that grip the sapphire crystal at the cardinal points and the Roman numerals engraved into the bezel. The version here is the small ladies' quartz case on an integrated steel bracelet, the one Omega sold as the My Choice. The model and reference are not engraved anywhere the lens can find them, so the watch is read at the level the screen allows: brand and line, both unmistakable.

The Constellation is Omega's dress line, sitting apart from the diver's Seamaster and the chronograph Speedmaster. On Mary Ann it reads as precisely what it is, a respectable Swiss watch bought because respectable women wear Swiss watches. Field cast the playground mothers as a social hierarchy with Mary Ann at the top, and the Constellation, expensive enough to signal status and conventional enough to signal conformity, is the right watch for a woman whose authority comes from never deviating from the expected.
