Marwan Kenzari wears a Casio G-Shock Mudmaster

Marwan Kenzari plays Yusuf Al-Kaysani, called Joe, in Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Old Guard (2020), the Netflix film from Greg Rucka's comic about a small band of immortal mercenaries. Joe has been alive since the Crusades, where he met his partner Nicky (Luca Marinelli) as an enemy before the two fell in love over the centuries that followed. After nine hundred-odd years and every kind of timekeeper from sundial to atomic clock, what he straps on for the job is a Casio G-Shock.

The G-Shock specialist site G-Central identifies it as the Mudmaster GG-1000, the mud- and dust-resistant model with a twin sensor, a digital compass and a thermometer, that runs a few hundred dollars. It is a tool watch, not an heirloom, and that is the point: for a man who fights for a living and cannot die, what matters is a watch that survives the work, not one that appreciates in a safe.
