On the deck of the rig, hard hat in place and a duffel in one hand, Mike Williams looks up at the derrick with a black sport watch on his wrist. Mark Wahlberg plays Williams in Deepwater Horizon, Peter Berg's 2016 dramatization of the 2010 blowout that destroyed BP's rig in the Gulf of Mexico and killed eleven men, the worst marine oil spill in American history.
Williams was the rig's chief electronics technician, a real man who survived the explosion and later testified about the corners BP cut to save time, and Wahlberg plays him as the competent everyman watching the disaster build while the company men wave off the warnings. The watch is a black-cased sport watch, the kind issued to nobody and worn by everybody who works with their hands, but no maker reads in the shot, so it stays unidentified.
It is a tool on the wrist of a man whose job is keeping the rig's systems alive, in a film about the night all of them fail at once. Williams was among the last off the platform, jumping into burning water from a deck a hundred feet up.
