Macaulay Culkin wears a Breitling Chronomat

Donald Petrie directed Richie Rich, adapted from the Harvey Comics character about the wealthiest kid in the world. Macaulay Culkin was 13 when he made it, already past the peak of his Home Alone fame and heading toward the burnout that would take him off screen for years. Edward Herrmann and Christine Ebersole play his parents, Jonathan Hyde plays the loyal butler Cadbury, and John Larroquette plays the corporate villain trying to steal the family fortune after the parents' plane goes down. The film is a kid's fantasy about having unlimited money and no real problems, which made it the right vehicle for Culkin at the time.

Richie wears a Breitling Chronomat, which is a pilot's chronograph on the wrist of a child. Ernest Schneider relaunched Breitling in 1979 and introduced the Chronomat in 1984, designed in partnership with the Italian Air Force aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori. The rider tabs at the four cardinal points on the rotating bezel exist so pilots can turn it while wearing flight gloves. It is a 42mm steel case with an automatic chronograph movement, built for professional aviators who need to time approaches and fuel burns. Richie Rich has access to private jets but is not old enough to drive a car.

Everything in Richie's world is comically oversized for a child: the mansion, the fortune, the butler, the corporate intrigue. The watch fits the same pattern. It is a grown man's tool watch on a kid who still plays baseball in his yard, and it probably slid up and down his wrist every time he moved.
