Liam Neeson spends Battleship in dress whites. He plays Admiral Terrance Shane, commander of the Pacific Fleet, and in this still he sits in a ship's wardroom with his chin on his hand, rows of ribbons across his chest and a wall of younger officers at attention behind him. The film is the one where the United States Navy fights an alien fleet in the waters off Hawaii, and Shane sits at the top of the chain of command, the authority everyone below him is trying not to disappoint.

On his wrist is a Hamilton, and a slightly surprising one. Up close the dial reads navy blue, a busy aviation chronograph rather than anything a sailor would obviously reach for. It is identified as the Hamilton Khaki X-Wind, the line built around a drift-angle calculator, a rotating scale a pilot uses to work out how far a crosswind will push him off course. An admiral commands ships, but a Pacific Fleet runs on carriers and aircraft as much as hulls, so the flying man's watch on the senior sailor is less of a mismatch than it first looks. Hamilton has made a second career out of this kind of casting, turning up on astronauts and soldiers across Interstellar, The Martian and Independence Day: Resurgence, where this same X-Wind rides on Liam Hemsworth's wrist.
