Michael MacCauley's day starts the way it always does: the Hudson Line from Tarrytown to Grand Central, the same train, the same faces. Then his insurance firm abruptly lays him off, putting his family's finances in danger, and on the ride home a stranger named Joanna sits down across from him with a proposition: identify a passenger traveling under the name Prynne, and 25,000 dollars is waiting in the lavatory, with another 75,000 to follow. Liam Neeson plays MacCauley, a former NYPD officer, in his fourth film with director Jaume Collet-Serra after Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night, and Vera Farmiga plays the woman with the offer.
On MacCauley's wrist, the French watch site Montres de Luxe identified a Hamilton Jazzmaster, noting that Neeson already wore Hamiltons through the Taken films, a regular of the brand. Hamilton noticed its own cameo. The company's official Facebook account listed The Commuter, alongside American Assassin, among "recent Hamilton watch appearances in smash hit movies," in a post that went on to dig the Murph watch out of its Interstellar archive. Hamilton's screen history runs back to Shanghai Express in 1932 by the brand's own telling. The available stills keep the watch under MacCauley's cuff, so the Jazzmaster naming rests with the watch press, while the Hamilton itself carries the brand's own signature.
The film opened on January 12, 2018, and took 119.9 million dollars worldwide, the fourth product of a partnership that had already put Neeson on a hijacked plane in Non-Stop and now put him on a train.
