Joe Carnahan's The Grey (2011) opens with Liam Neeson putting a rifle in his mouth. He plays John Ottway, a marksman hired by an Alaskan oil company to shoot the wolves that threaten its workers, a man at the end of his rope before the story even starts. Then the plane carrying him and a crew of roughnecks back toward civilization goes down in the snow, and the survivors find themselves walking through wolf country with almost nothing. Most of them do not make it out.

The watch on Ottway's wrist is a Fossil BQ9385. BAMF Style, who tracked it down, describes a 45mm case and bracelet in blackened brushed steel, a black dial with baton markers and three analog hands, and two small digital windows running a chronograph, an alarm, and the date, worked by four pushers around the case. It is an ana-digi fashion watch, the kind Fossil sold for around a hundred dollars at a department store counter, not a field watch and not a G-Shock. Out in the snow, none of its functions are any use against the cold or the wolves.

Ottway is not a kitted-out survivalist. He is a working sharpshooter who happened to be wearing a cheap multifunction watch when his plane fell out of the sky, and the film never makes it mean anything more than that. It is just what was on his wrist.
