Lee Marvin wears a Rolex Submariner

Walker is shot in a cell on Alcatraz by his partner Mal Reese and left for dead over a $93,000 split. Then he comes back for the money. That is the whole engine of Point Blank, and John Boorman's 1967 film carried a production first along with it: it was the first major picture to shoot on Alcatraz after the federal prison closed in 1963.

The Rolex Submariner attributed to Walker is a slippery thing to verify. The one published article on Lee Marvin and a Submariner belongs to a different movie, Don Siegel's The Killers, which France released under the title À bout portant, words that translate back to English as Point Blank. That article calls Marvin a regular wearer of good watches, with a Heuer chronograph in The Delta Force and a Rolex Datejust in The Klansman. For Point Blank itself nobody has published an identification, and when Walker stalks the Los Angeles River channel with his revolver drawn, his suit cuffs cover both wrists.

The film existed because Marvin wanted Boorman. The actor held approval over script and cast and handed both to his director, and the two men agreed the script they had was terrible; Marvin made the point by throwing his copy out a window. A blank fired during the Alcatraz scenes put eight stitches in Sharon Acker's hand. Years later, after Marvin died, his widow offered Boorman a keepsake, and he chose the size thirteen shoes Marvin wore in the airport scene.
