The Front Man spends nearly all of Squid Game behind a black mask and a tailored suit, giving almost nothing of himself away, which is what makes the one unguarded shot of his wrist worth noticing. In a brief insert during the season one episode "VIPs," he checks a watch: a Casio A168W-1, the all-steel digital descendant of the F-91W that Casio has sold since the 1980s under the "Electro Luminescence" name printed right on the dial.

It's a strange, almost funny choice for a man who runs an operation worth hundreds of millions of dollars in cash. Hwang In-ho, revealed later to be both the Front Man and a former winner of the games himself, dresses the part of an executive everywhere except this one detail, a twenty-dollar watch doing the same job it does on wrists in convenience stores and army barracks the world over. Squid Game's costuming tends to say something about class and disguise, and a mask that expensive paired with a watch that cheap reads as exactly that kind of note.
