Laurence Arné wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

In one scene of La Ch'tite Famille (2018), released in English as Family Is Family, Valentin D. sits reading a Paris Match with his own face on the cover. The magazine calls him "le designer," names Constance Brandt beside him "sa muse," and crowns them the couple of the year. Constance, played by Laurence Arne, wears a black dress and, on her wrist, a slim rectangular steel watch on a dark leather strap. The French watch site Montres de Luxe identified it as a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. No other source has weighed in, and in the still the case sits turned so no brand can be read, so the identification rests on one report and a silhouette that happens to match the most recognizable rectangle in watchmaking.

Valentin and Constance are a fashionable pair of architect-designers preparing a retrospective of their work at the Palais de Tokyo, and Valentin, played by Dany Boon, who also directed and co-wrote the film, has built that life on a lie about his working-class family in the North. On the day of the opening, his mother, played by Line Renaud, arrives unannounced with his brother and sister-in-law; Pierre Richard plays his father. Then a car hits Valentin, and the partial amnesia that follows convinces him he is seventeen years old again. The film returned Boon to the Ch'ti comedy territory of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis and opened in France on February 28, 2018.

The Reverso came out of a polo problem. In 1931, the Swiss businessman Cesar de Trey was challenged by British army officers in India, whose matches kept shattering watch crystals, to make a watch that could survive the game. Back in Europe he turned to Jacques-David LeCoultre, and the designer Rene-Alfred Chauvot drew a case that slides in its frame and flips over, so the solid steel back takes the knocks while the dial hides against the wrist. Chauvot filed the patent on March 4, 1931, and the name registered that November is Latin for "I turn."
