There is a shot in Manipulations of Frank Barrot walking through a room full of young dancers in red leotards, a phone to his ear, a dark suit under a deep red scarf, entirely untroubled by the noise around him. Barrot is a police superintendent, and untroubled is his default setting. In Laurent Herbiet's 2012 French thriller, released in English as State Conspiracy, a group calling itself Le CAMU has rigged bombs across the national rail network and made the government a single offer: pay the ransom, or watch the SNCF go up, the whole threat timed to the weeks before a presidential election. When the anti terror unit runs out of road, it calls Barrot back in, controversial reputation and all, to take the group apart before the bombs do their work.

On the wrist holding that phone is a steel Rolex Datejust. The identification comes from a single French watch column, Montres de Luxe, and from the still you can confirm only the broad strokes: a steel case, a light dial, a steel bracelet, no reference you can read off the screen. The Datejust is the most ordinary watch Rolex makes, and that suits him. It is not a diver's tool or a pilot's chronograph or anything that announces an appetite, just the plain steel default of a man who has stopped trying to be noticed. Where he got it, the film never says.
