Kurt Russell stars as Snake Plissken in Escape from New York (1981), John Carpenter's dystopian thriller that made the actor an action icon. In a near-future where Manhattan has been walled off into a single maximum-security prison, the disgraced soldier Snake is handed a brutal deal: break in, rescue the President from a downed Air Force One, and get out within twenty-two hours, before explosive charges implanted in his body go off. Snake keeps tabs on that deadline with the countdown timer strapped to his wrist, the device fans came to know as the "Lifeclock," ticking down the hours he has left to live.

The Lifeclock is a custom movie prop rather than a production watch, so there is no commercial brand behind it, which is part of why it built such a cult following. In 2016 the Ridgewood Watch Company ran a Kickstarter to build a fully working replica, the "Lifeclock One," and a couple of years later the piece reached production, sold through Sideshow Collectibles as a wearable smartwatch with a screen-accurate 22:59:59 countdown. In this dim standoff Snake holds a scoped, suppressed weapon on a seated man, the watch sitting low on his wrist and half lost in the shadows.
