At the racetrack with Dakota Fanning at his elbow, Kurt Russell studies a racing form with the focus of a man who has spent his whole life reading horses. Russell plays Ben Crane in Dreamer, John Gatins's 2005 family drama inspired by the true story of Mariah's Storm, a filly who shattered her leg during a race in 1993 and came back to win the following year. Ben is a horse trainer who gets fired for refusing to put down an injured thoroughbred, then takes the horse home and lets his daughter Cale help rehabilitate her. Kris Kristofferson plays Ben's estranged father, and the three-generation family conflict gives the film more weight than its sports-movie setup suggests.
On Russell's wrist is a round white-dialed watch on a dark leather strap, clearly visible as he holds the racing form. It is a clean, classic piece — the kind of watch a working horseman might actually own. The brand has not been identified.
