Julie Sawyer hits a white German shepherd with her car one night, takes it in, and slowly realizes the dog has been trained to attack Black people. In White Dog (1982), Kristy McNichol plays Julie, a young Los Angeles actress who hands the animal to a trainer named Keys (Paul Winfield) in the hope that the conditioning can be undone. Samuel Fuller, a former crime reporter and World War II infantryman, co-wrote the script with Curtis Hanson from Romain Gary's novel, and made the racism in it so explicit that Paramount kept the finished film on the shelf for years.

On Julie's wrist is said to be a Cartier Santos in steel and gold. Louis Cartier designed the Santos in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without taking his hands off the controls, and its square case and exposed bezel screws made it one of the most recognizable watches in production by the early 1980s.
