24 reinvented the TV thriller in 2001 with its real-time conceit: one hour of airtime for one hour of Jack Bauer's very bad day. In the first season, Kiefer Sutherland's counter-terrorism agent wears a steel Rolex Submariner Date, years before he became associated with the matte-black MTM Special Ops of later seasons. During the Day 1 night, around seven in the evening, he checks it by flashlight: the black dial reads Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner over a date at three and its Cyclops, set on the rotating dive bezel, the reference 16610 of its era. It is a rugged, legible tool watch rather than a conversation piece, which suited the grounded register of the early show.
