Kevin Spacey directed and starred in Beyond the Sea (2004), the Bobby Darin biopic he spent years trying to get made. The watch Darin wears through it is a Breitling Premier, the rose-gold chronograph from Breitling's 1940s dress line, the era before the Navitimer and the pilot's instruments took over the brand's identity. Two subdials, a cream dial, Arabic numerals, the name and "Premier" both legible across the face: an elegant watch for a Copacabana headliner who dressed the part.
The film keeps it on screen and even gives it lines. A young Bobby (William Ullrich) tells his adult self the watch is running slow and ought to be fixed. In the recording studio, while Darin writes "Splish Splash", his manager Steve Blauner (John Goodman) clocks the watch and says they have an hour. Darin takes it off to shave and straps it back on with a bowtie before a show, and in one close shot his shirt cuff is monogrammed BD. A 1940s gold dress chronograph, still on the wrist of a 1960s entertainer.
