Adam Sandler co-wrote Grown Ups with Fred Wolf and cast himself as the successful one. Dennis Dugan directed. The premise is five former basketball teammates reuniting at a lake house for the Fourth of July after their childhood coach dies. Sandler is the Hollywood agent married to Salma Hayek. Chris Rock is the house husband. David Spade is the single guy. Rob Schneider is the odd one. Kevin James is Eric Lamonsoff, the one who co-owns a lawn furniture store and has the least interesting life on paper.
Eric wears a Casio G-Shock G100-1BV, one of the cheaper models in the lineup. Fifty, maybe sixty dollars. It is an ana-digi — analog hands over a digital display — with 200-meter water resistance and the standard shock-resistant construction that Kikuo Ibe built into the original G-Shock in 1983. No solar, no Bluetooth, no complications beyond telling time and setting an alarm.
The watch fits Eric because Eric is the guy who buys things that work and keeps them until they break. He is surrounded by friends who got rich or at least got famous, and he is still selling patio furniture. He is not embarrassed by any of it. The G100 is the watch of a man who has better things to worry about than what is on his wrist, and Sandler's script knows that is the most likeable position in the room.
