Kevin Hart owns a lot of watches, good ones. He has turned up to host things wearing a big Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the kind that costs more than a car. So it is a small, deliberate joke that for all of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), he wears a Casio that costs twenty-five dollars. The film is about four high-school kids in detention who get pulled into an old console game, the way the kids in Tron got pulled into the machine. The big football jock, Fridge, picks his avatar badly and becomes Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, a pint-sized zoologist played by Hart, whose listed weaknesses include strength, speed, and cake.
The watch is a Casio AE1200WH-1A, the square-cased World Timer that retails for $24.95 and tracks thirty-one time zones, less than a dollar apiece, with a tiny map on the dial that blacks out whichever zone you are in. The movie likes it. Early on, while Finbar is still panicking about his new voice and his new size, the camera keeps finding the Casio. And when he rolls his wrist to look at the three small rectangles tattooed underneath, the marks that count his three lives in the game, the shot holds just long enough to catch the strap keeper, which says, clearly, Casio.
The watch is the joke in miniature. The whole movie is about a big, swaggering football jock stuck inside a small, unassuming body, learning to live there, and the prop department dressed the wrist to match. The one real watch collector in the cast spends it in a twenty-five-dollar Casio, and that is exactly right.
