Tony Scott's Revenge (1990) is a sun-scorched, operatic thriller about a retired Navy pilot who sleeps with the wrong man's wife. Kevin Costner plays Michael "Jay" Cochran, who visits his old friend Tiburon Mendez (Anthony Quinn), a wealthy and dangerous Mexican powerbroker, and falls for his wife Miryea (Madeleine Stowe). What follows is predictable in outline and savage in execution; Scott shoots Mexico like a fever dream, all amber light and slow-motion violence.
The Rolex Submariner Date on Cochran's wrist fits his backstory. He spent twelve years in the Navy, and military pilots had been buying Submariners since the 1960s, a watch robust enough for carrier duty and legible in a cockpit. Rolex added the date complication to the Submariner in 1969 with the reference 1680, putting a Cyclops magnifier over the date window at three o'clock. On a man who has just left the service, it is the one piece of the old life he still has on.
