Atom Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies (2005) opens in the world of 1950s show business, where Lanny and Vince, a comedy duo modeled loosely on Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, are at the peak of their fame. Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth play the partners, and Alison Lohman plays the young journalist who, years later, begins pulling at the unsolved death of a woman once found in their hotel suite. The film moves between the heyday and the reckoning, letting the truth surface in fragments, and Bacon plays Lanny as a man whose charm is both genuine and weaponized.
Lanny wears a Hamilton Ventura, the asymmetric, shield-cased watch Hamilton launched in 1957 as the world's first electric wristwatch, with a case designed by Richard Arbib that looked like nothing else on the market. It is an apt, period-correct flourish for a late-1950s entertainer at the top of the bill.
