Ken Watanabe wears a Rolex Submariner

Saito is the man who buys his way onto the job. In Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010), Ken Watanabe plays the billionaire who hires Dom Cobb's team to plant an idea in the mind of a rival's heir, and who then insists on riding along into the dream himself. He takes a bullet on the first level, and because no one truly dies down there, he keeps slipping deeper instead, all the way to the bottom, where the film finds him decades later as an old man at a table, waiting for someone to remind him this is a dream.

On his wrist is a Rolex Submariner. You can pick it out in the den where the dreamers lie sleeping on cots: a steel sports watch on a steel bracelet with a dark bezel, the most recognizable dive watch ever made. Cobb and his crew wear working watches, a TAG Heuer on Cobb, a pilot's IWC on Arthur, the tools of people who do this for a living. Saito, who could strap on anything, wears the steel Rolex that turns up on bankers and Navy divers alike.

Which Submariner, though, is a question nobody has actually answered. The reference that gets repeated online, the 114060, cannot be the one, because Rolex did not release the 114060 until 2012, two years after the film. No watch publication of any standing has identified Saito's watch, and the costume team, who happily described his double-breasted suits in later interviews, never mentioned it. So the honest version is the plain one. The wealthiest character in Inception wears a steel Rolex Submariner, which one the film never lets you see, and which no one has ever pinned down.
