On a sun-washed porch in a small Nebraska town, Officer Tom McGonigle stands beside John Skillpa, one hand planted on his hip and the other at his gun belt, both men looking down at something on the boards between them. Josh Lucas plays the officer in Peacock, the 2010 psychological drama Michael Lander directed and co-wrote. Cillian Murphy plays Skillpa, a withdrawn bank clerk living with dissociative identity disorder, opposite Elliot Page and Susan Sarandon. The story is set in the mid-1960s, and the production dresses Lucas in a tan western snap-button shirt and a leather gun belt whose brass buckle, ammo pouches and holster are the sharpest objects in the frame.
The watch is the thing the camera was not really looking at. It shows only because McGonigle's hand is pushed up onto his hip, rolling the shirt cuff back far enough to expose the wrist. What sits there is a bright steel-toned case that reads as rectangular, closer to a tonneau than a round dress watch, on a dark brown leather strap, the dial angled into shadow so no text or hands resolve. Lucas also wears a plain gold band on his ring finger, and in this frame the wedding ring is the one piece of jewelry you can actually identify. The watch stays an era-plausible mid-century American dress piece and nothing more certain than that.
