Anthony Hopkins delivering exposition about Merlin and King Arthur while a robot butler threatens to stab Mark Wahlberg — that is the energy of The Last Knight, Michael Bay's fifth and final Transformers film. The script, credited to three writers, connects the franchise to every major historical event from the Dark Ages through World War II, and the result is genuinely unhinged. Bay was clearly done with these movies and decided to go out swinging at everything within reach. The film made $600 million worldwide, which for any other franchise would be a triumph but for Transformers represented a steep enough decline that Paramount rethought the entire series.

Lennox occupies strange ground in this one. He is working with the TRF, the government's anti-Transformer task force, which puts him technically on the opposite side from the Autobots he fought alongside for a decade. Whether that tension amounts to much depends on how carefully you are tracking the plot, which the film does not always make easy. A watch is visible on Duhamel's wrist, but the model remains unidentified. Colonel Lennox is the kind of military character who should be wearing something specific and readable, tactical and no-nonsense, but Bay's camera is never still long enough to get a clean look.
