Warhorse One was Johnny Strong's film in nearly every credit line: he wrote and directed it with William Kaufman, who had already directed him in Sinners and Saints and Daylight's End, he composed music for it, and he stars as Master Chief Richard Mirko, a Navy SEAL sent to evacuate missionaries shortly after the 2021 American withdrawal from Afghanistan. The helicopter goes down, the team is gone, and the lone surviving operator walks out of the mountains guiding his one remaining charge, a traumatized young girl. Well Go USA gave it a limited release on June 30, 2023 and put it on demand on the Fourth of July; the premiere raised money for the Navy SEALs Fund, and the reviews split between admiration for the grounded approach and impatience with the budget showing through.
The watch identification on this record is the cleanest kind there is. Strong posted the watch himself: a photograph on his Instagram showing two G-Shocks, the Mudmaster GG-1000-1A5 he wears in Warhorse One and, beside it, the G-Shock he wore in Black Hawk Down in 2001. G-Central logged the post. The GG-1000 is a Twin Sensor Mudmaster, built around the mud-resistant button structure the line is named for, and in the film it sits under the sleeve of a man crossing Taliban-held country on foot.
Two G-Shocks, twenty-two years apart, both photographed by the man who wore them. Most watch identifications are reconstructed from trailers and frame enlargements. This one came signed.
