Johnny Depp wears a Rolex Submariner

Blow credits George Jung with moving as much as eighty-five percent of the cocaine in the United States at his peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Ted Demme's 2001 film follows Johnny Depp as Jung from a young man dealing marijuana on a California beach to a smuggler with more cash than he can find places to hide. Ray Liotta plays his working-class father, and Penelope Cruz plays his wife, Mirtha, across a story that runs about thirty years.

The watch on Jung's wrist during his richest years is gold. BAMF Style, looking closely at the film, describes a yellow gold dive watch with a black bezel and black dial, a date window at three o'clock, on a gold bracelet, and identifies it tentatively as a Rolex Submariner Date, the gold reference 1680/8 that Rolex introduced at the end of the 1960s. The hedge is fair, because the brand is never legible on screen and a gold diver of this shape was widely imitated. Rolex built the steel Submariner as a diver's tool; the gold 1680/8 was the dressed-up version of the same watch.
