The Object of Beauty (1991) is Michael Lindsay-Hogg's comedy of two grifters, Jake (John Malkovich) and Tina (Andie MacDowell), scheming to collect insurance on a small Henry Moore sculpture that then vanishes. Short on cash, Jake stops into an antiques shop and asks an old friend what he can get for his Cartier wristwatch, laying it on the counter beside a pair of cuff links. The watch is not clearly legible on screen, so the Cartier attribution rests on the scene's dialogue, but pawning the good watch is the right small humiliation for a man whose whole life is liquidity.
