John Daly wears a Rolex Yacht-Master II

In August 1991, the ninth and final alternate at the PGA Championship drove through the night to Crooked Stick because Nick Price had dropped out to be with his wife for the birth of their child. John Daly arrived too late for a practice round and won the tournament anyway. Thirty-four years later he turns up in Happy Gilmore 2 playing himself, in a mostly non-golfing part: he is Gilmore's houseguest in Kyle Newacheck's Netflix sequel, with Adam Sandler back as the hothead golfer trying to fund his daughter's dream.

The watch on his wrist is a Rolex Yacht-Master II in 18-karat yellow gold, reference 116688, one of the two versions the model launched with in 2007. At 44 millimeters it is the largest watch in the Rolex lineup, and its signature complication has nothing to do with golf: turning the bezel programs a mechanical countdown of one to ten minutes, with a memory, built to time a skipper's run at a regatta starting line. Retail is 43,550 dollars.

Off screen Daly is endorsed by LoudMouth, the colorful clothing line that matches his non-country-club style, and by his own count he lost somewhere between 50 and 60 million dollars gambling over fifteen years. The film credits him as Himself, and the watch appears to be exactly that, his: Daly wears the same gold Yacht-Master II in real life, including on the day he and his son accepted the PNC Championship trophy.
