Stephen Frears directed Donald Westlake's adaptation of Jim Thompson's 1963 novel about three grifters who happen to be family. Anjelica Huston plays Lilly Dillon, who works the racetracks for the mob and drew an Oscar nomination; John Cusack is her son Roy, a short-con artist running small scams at bars and shop counters; and Annette Bening is Myra, his girlfriend and a long-con operator who wants to scale him up. Thompson's people destroy each other less from malice than because the grift demands it.

Cusack wears a two-tone Seiko 7A34-7019, an analog quartz chronograph from the mid-1980s. Seiko's 7A series, launched in 1983, was the first analog quartz chronograph, an all-metal caliber the company built to a standard the Swiss usually reserved for mechanical watches, then sold for around $100 to $200 in the same cases as department-store digitals. At least two of the screen-used examples later turned up in a Prop Store auction. The watch has a gold bezel, a beige dial, three sub-dials, and a date at 12.
