Pierre Morel, the French director who made Taken, built Freelance (2023) around John Cena as Mason Pettits, a medically retired Army Special Forces soldier whose helicopter was shot down on a failed assassination mission and who spent the years afterward as a lawyer. He takes a private security job escorting the journalist Claire Wellington to Paldonia, a fictional South American country, for an interview with its president, Juan Venegas, and the trip collapses into a coup backed by South African mercenaries with designs on the country's mineral resources. Lawyer, client, and dictator end up running through the jungle together. The film earned 10.2 million dollars against a 40 million dollar budget, and the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds ten percent, says it 'offers no benefits.'

In one of the film's gilded interior scenes Cena raises a pistol with his sleeves pushed up, and the watch on his left wrist resolves clearly enough to read its layout: black resin case, four small screws around the bezel, analog hands crossing a world-map dial, a digital window below them. That is the face of the Casio AEQ-200W, an analog-digital world timer that tracks 48 cities across 31 time zones, runs about five years on a coin cell, weighs 54 grams with its resin glass, and steps its minute hand forward once every twenty seconds. Casio lists it today at just under fifty-six dollars. World time is the one feature on the dial that maps onto the job description: a man who flies from an American law office to a South American palace needs his home time and his local time at the same glance. That is a reading of the prop, not a documented choice; nobody from the production has said why this watch.

The paper trail behind the identification is thinner than the image. No watch publication covered Freelance. The only published naming of the model is a watch-spotting database entry and a WatchCrunch forum post that repeats it, and the post describes the watch as solar powered and fifty millimeters across; Casio's specification sheet says it runs on a CR2016 battery for about five years and measures 53.7 millimeters tall. What settles the question is the frame itself. Hold the still against Casio's product photo and the four bezel screws, the world-time sub-dial at nine o'clock, the map across the upper face, and the digital window below all line up, on the black-and-grey colorway rather than the blue.
