Joaquin Phoenix learned to play guitar and sing for Walk the Line, and the fact that you believe him as Johnny Cash for even a minute is the whole achievement. James Mangold directed this 2005 biopic, which traces Cash from his childhood in Arkansas through his Air Force service, his early Sun Records sessions with Sam Phillips, his amphetamine addiction, and his long pursuit of June Carter. Reese Witherspoon plays Carter and won the Oscar; Phoenix was nominated. The film ends with the Folsom Prison concert in 1968, which is smart — it stops before the story gets repetitive. Phoenix does not try to imitate Cash's voice exactly, but he captures the depth and the darkness of it, and Mangold keeps the period detail specific enough that the film feels lived-in rather than costumed.
