Robert Rodriguez made Desperado for seven million dollars and it looks like it cost ten times that. Antonio Banderas is El Mariachi, a musician with a guitar case full of guns, hunting the drug lord who killed his girlfriend. Joaquim de Almeida plays Bucho, that drug lord, a cartel boss who runs his territory from a compound and dispenses violence through subordinates while wearing pressed shirts and a permanent scowl. His scenes with Banderas crackle with genuine hatred.
A watch-spotting site identifies the watch on de Almeida's wrist as a Rolex Datejust, an understated choice for a drug lord. Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945 as a clean automatic dress watch with a date window, and by the 1990s it read as the watch of bankers and lawyers, of a man who considers himself legitimate. The watch is not clearly visible in the available stills, so the identification stays tentative.
