Massimo Dallamano shot A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More as Sergio Leone's cinematographer before moving to the director's chair. By 1972, he was making giallo, the Italian thriller genre named for the yellow covers of the pulp novels that inspired it. What Have You Done to Solange? is his best-known work in the genre: a murder mystery set at a London girls' school where Catholic students are being killed and a teacher having an affair with a pupil becomes the prime suspect.

Fuchsberger plays Inspector Barth, the detective on the case; the suspected teacher, Enrico Rosseni, is Fabio Testi, and Camille Keaton plays the title character. Fuchsberger had spent the 1960s as a fixture of German krimi films, playing detectives and investigators in dozens of Edgar Wallace adaptations.

The film's watch is harder to pin down. A single French watch site identifies it as a steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with a plexiglass crystal, worn by Fuchsberger, but no other source documents it and it is not clearly visible in the available stills. If it is a Daytona, it is an unremarkable one for 1972: the model had been in production since 1963, was selling slowly, and had not yet become the watch collectors would later fight over.
