Jing Wu wears an Omega Seamaster

Jiuming Zhang holds a chunk of dark rock up to a flashlight and studies it. On the wrist angled toward the light is a big dive watch on a grey rubber strap lined in orange, sitting just below a thin red string bracelet. It is an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M, the titanium model with the grey ceramic bezel and orange accents.

Jiuming is played by Wu Jing, the biggest action star in China. He directed and starred in Wolf Warrior 2, which is still the highest-grossing film in the country's history. Here he raises an eighty-foot Megalodon named Haiqi, a pup grown up in a reserve off Hainan, which is the premise of the movie and not a twist in it. Ben Wheatley directed the sequel, the same Ben Wheatley who made Kill List and A Field in England, arthouse horror a long way from a giant shark.

The watch is harder to pin down than the film's product-placement listing makes it sound. The identification comes from a single crowdsourced database that read it off the first trailer and assigned it a full reference number from a few seconds of footage. No watch magazine and no word from Omega back that up, and on screen the dial never turns far enough to show a logo. What you can see is the hardware that marks a Planet Ocean: the thick titanium-grey case, the fat conical crown, the grey rubber strap lined in orange that came with the titanium version. It reads as a Planet Ocean. Which exact one is the database's guess, not the screen's.
