Jim Carrey plays Edward Nygma in Batman Forever, a Wayne Enterprises scientist who becomes the Riddler after Bruce Wayne rejects his mind-reading invention and he loses his grip on sanity. Joel Schumacher directed this 1995 superhero film, taking over the franchise from Tim Burton and steering it toward neon colors and broader performances. Carrey was at the peak of his stardom after The Mask and Ace Ventura, and he brings the same manic energy to the Riddler, all twitching and cackling and spandex. The performance is polarizing: either you find it hilarious or exhausting, and there is not much middle ground. Tommy Lee Jones plays Two-Face in the same film, and the two villains compete for screen time and scenery to chew. Val Kilmer is Batman, but the movie belongs to its villains, and Carrey makes sure you never forget he is there. His watch has not been identified.
