Jeremy Strong wears a Rolex Oysterquartz

Adam McKay's The Big Short (2015) follows the handful of investors who saw the 2008 housing collapse coming and bet against it. Jeremy Strong plays Vinny Daniel, an analyst on Mark Baum's team at the fund FrontPoint Partners, the group that dug into the mortgage bonds and could not believe how rotten they were. Daniel is based on a real FrontPoint analyst, Vincent Daniel, who along with his colleagues visited the set during production.

The watch on his wrist is a Rolex Oysterquartz, which Hodinkee pinned down to a white-dial Datejust Oysterquartz seen in a few scenes. The Oysterquartz is the odd one out in the Rolex story: a quartz watch from a brand whose whole identity is mechanical. Rolex built it from 1977 to the early 2000s as an answer to the Japanese quartz wave, with an in-house movement more accurate than any of its mechanical calibers, and made only about 25,000 of them in 25 years. In the FrontPoint conference-room scene, where the team rounds on Jared Vennett, it sits on Strong's wrist, a steel watch with a pale dial on an integrated bracelet.
