Jeremy Renner plays Aaron Cross in Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy, an operative from a black program called Outcome who goes on the run when the agency starts killing off its own enhanced agents in the fallout from the Jason Bourne affair. On his wrist for most of the film is an IWC Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun, reference IW379901, which the film frames in tight close-up.

It is a serious piece of hardware. The case is 46 millimeters of black ceramic, hard and matte and very hard to scratch, with the crown, pushers and caseback in grey titanium. The "double chronograph" part is the unusual one: a second chronograph hand sits stacked under the first, so you can stop it to read a split time while the other keeps running, then send it to catch up. That complication costs money, and this one retailed for around twelve thousand dollars before IWC discontinued it.

None of that was an accident. IWC made a placement deal with Universal for the film, and the watch trade was writing about the Top Gun's coming appearance before it opened. The Top Gun name comes from the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School, and IWC builds the line in ceramic and titanium for the matte, non-reflective finish. Its clearest moment on screen comes in the snow of the opening Alaska sequence, the black dial and red chronograph hand dusted with frost.
