Jeremy Piven wears a Chanel J12

Roman is lounging in a dim recording studio, lit red, when the camera catches him at his loosest: black trilby tipped back, a green bottle of Carlsberg in one hand, the other raised lazily behind his neck. That last gesture is what matters, because lifting his arm against the red sleeve puts a white watch front and center, the brightest object in a room full of shadows. Jeremy Piven plays Roman, the American music-industry hustler who manages the wayward rocker Johnny Quid, dropped into the London underworld of Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla. Ritchie wrote and directed it in 2008, his third London crime ensemble after Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, with a cast that runs deep: Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Mark Strong, and Tom Wilkinson.

The watch on Roman's wrist is a Chanel J12 in white ceramic, identifiable by its case and bracelet even though the scene's red light washes the dial to a hot pink and leaves no markings legible. The bracelet settles it: the J12 carries an unmistakable architecture of wide, rounded center blocks flanked by smaller links, and the white ceramic stays white even under the red wash, where most surfaces would go to shadow. The J12 was designed by Jacques Hélleu, Chanel's longtime artistic director, who borrowed the name from the J-Class racing yachts he loved, and it launched in 1999 as one of the first luxury watches built entirely in scratch-resistant high-tech ceramic. The black version came first; the white ceramic Roman is wearing arrived around 2003, comfortably before the film. Because the dial is unreadable, the exact reference stays open, and that matters more than it sounds: the J12 line spans both high-precision quartz and self-winding mechanical calibers, so there is no honest way to pin Roman's to one movement.

What is interesting is the choice itself. Roman is an entertainment-industry operator, the kind of man who wants taste read at a glance, and a white Chanel ceramic does that without reaching for the usual collector's Rolex or Patek. It signals fashion-house money rather than watch-nerd money, which is exactly right for the one American in a room of London gangsters. And it is very Guy Ritchie that the loudest object in a shadowy, red-lit studio is a watch glowing pink on the wrist of the man least equipped to survive what is coming.
