Jeremy Northam wears a Rolex Datejust

Mimic was Guillermo del Toro's first Hollywood film, and he has spoken openly about how badly it went. Dimension Films took the picture away from him in post-production and recut it, an experience he has called among the worst of his career. What reached theaters in 1997 is a creature feature set in the tunnels of the New York subway, where a genetically engineered insect species has evolved to imitate the humans hunting it. Jeremy Northam plays Dr. Peter Mann, a CDC scientist who, with entomologist Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino), released the so-called Judas breed to wipe out the cockroaches spreading a deadly disease through the city's children. Three years on, the bugs have grown to the size of a man and learned to pass for one.

On Northam's wrist, in the bathtub scene he shares with Sorvino, is a steel Rolex Datejust on a steel bracelet. The identification comes from the watch-spotting site Montres de Luxe; the dial is washed out by the bathroom light and the brand is not legible on screen, so the call rests on that single read rather than on anything readable in the frame. The Datejust is the watch Rolex has built since 1945, the steel automatic with a date window that set the template every dress Rolex has followed since.
