Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) recasts Alfred Pennyworth as less a butler than Bruce Wayne's engineer and second-in-command, with Jeremy Irons in the role for the first time. On his wrist is a Breitling for Bentley 6.75 Midnight Carbon, a 49mm chronograph in black carbon-treated steel, its bezel knurled like a Bentley radiator grille, built in a run of 1,000.

Hodinkee could not pin the watch down from the screen alone. The shape and crown guards looked Breitling, but no model matched, so they asked Breitling directly, and the brand confirmed it: the 6.75 Midnight Carbon, reference M4436413/BD27-220S, named for the 6.75-litre engine in Bentley's Mulsanne and run by the COSC-certified Caliber 44B. As Hodinkee put it, for an Alfred who is now more second-in-command than tea-pouring flunkey, a tough all-black chronograph is not an illogical choice.
