Against All Odds (1984) is Taylor Hackford's loose remake of Out of the Past, the 1947 noir, with the private eye swapped for a washed-up NFL player. Jeff Bridges is Terry Brogan, cut from his team and broke, hired by the bookie Jake Wise (James Woods) to find Wise's runaway girlfriend in Mexico; Rachel Ward is Jessie, the woman Brogan is sent to retrieve and falls for instead. In a piece of pointed casting, Jane Greer, the femme fatale of the 1947 original, returns here as Jessie's mother.

The Rolex Submariner on Brogan's wrist is very likely Bridges' own. Watch writers, including Hodinkee and the specialist Jake's Rolex World, place it as a no-date Submariner and note he wore the same watch eight years earlier in the 1976 King Kong, carrying his personal Sub from film to film; they split only on the exact reference, 5513 or 5512. Rolex introduced the Submariner in 1953 as a diving tool, and by the mid-1980s it was the default tough, recognizable luxury sports watch.
