Jean-Pierre Darras wears a Cartier Tank

Gerard Oury built his career on big French chase comedies, and Out of It, released in France in 1978 as La Carapate, is another of them. It opens in May 1968. Pierre Richard plays Jean-Philippe Duroc, a lawyer who arrives at the prison to tell his client the final appeal has failed, and a mutiny breaks out in the cell blocks. The client, a convict played by Victor Lanoux, uses the chaos to steal Duroc's clothes and escape, and the police decide the lawyer helped, which puts both men on the run across France. Jean-Pierre Darras plays Jacques Panivaux, the Rolls-Royce owner who gets pulled into the chase. Oury wrote the script with Daniele Thompson, his daughter and regular collaborator.

Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917, the sides of its case modeled on a Renault tank viewed from above, and by the 1970s it had long been a standard dress watch among the well-off. For a character whose credit tag is the owner of the Rolls-Royce, a gold Cartier is fitting casting. But the identification rests on a single French watch publication, which catalogued the film, called the watch a yellow gold Cartier Tank, and took it to be Darras's own rather than a placement. No photograph runs with that claim, no other source repeats it, and Darras appears in none of the stills that circulate from the film, which leaves the identification unconfirmed.
